Although a critical cause for concern in its own right, a recent, fire-related outage that left a vast percentage of the Puerto-Rican population without power, was merely endemic of a larger systemic problem, specifically the Territory’s economic instability and debt, which has wreaked havoc on the country’s infrastructure, allowing the electrical company to remain unmodernized and vulnerable to events like the one causing the outage. Insurmountable debt, and government’s mismanagement of fiscal resources has left citizenry vulnerable to such events. Some wonder if a US sponsored bailout is the only hope. Meanwhile, residents are urged to keep supplies handy.
